There’s no place like Greensboro

By Sam Hellman on March 31st, 2008

I’m not going to lie; I was not excited to learn that I would be traveling to Des Moines, Iowa and Greensboro, N.C.With possible first round sites like sunny Stanford, Calif. and College Park, M.D. (just 30 minutes from my hometown, the beautiful Oak Hill, V.A.) and regional sites like New Orleans, it’s fair to be unhappy with my travel itinerary. But after seeing three Rutgers victories, traveling with Targum celebrities like the Heartbreak Kid Mike Vorkunov, Brendan “Statik” McInerney and Dan “Darkness” Bracaglia and WRSU personalities Dan “Thunder” Klioze and Chris Hansen Harring, I have begun to change my mind about this whole Greensboro thing. Now don’t get me wrong, plenty of things have not gone my way in Greensboro and being a freshman doesn’t help my cause. I’ve spent seven out of the last 11 nights sleeping on a couch, floor or chair because there are only two beds per hotel room. Because Thunder Klioze happens to be something like a tenth year senior and is able to rent a car, however there are five of us piled into his Jeep Compass so guess who the lucky freshman is that gets to ride in the middle of the back seat?Somewhere between sitting between Chris and Dan in the back of Klioze’s car on the way to the Smokehouse Grill and getting hit in the chest by Epiphanny Prince with a piece of chocolate in the locker room after the George Washington game, I realized that grinding it out now is completely worth a chance to go to Tampa next week and take advantage of other innocent Targum freshmen on future trips.Plenty of funny things have happened on this trip that don’t even relate to basketball.I have had many awkward run-ins with M.A. Mehta from the Ledger in bathrooms and elevators, hidden Chris Harring’s clothes in the ceiling above his bathroom and eaten more than enough mozzarella sticks and hope that C Vivian Stringer can take down Geno Auriemma and send the Russian, Brendan and myself to Tampa. And yes, Piph really did hit me with a piece of chocolate, not intentionally of course. I just got caught in between Prince and a bike-riding Heather Zurich during a post game interview.

Live from North Carolina, It’s….

By Mike Vorkunov on March 31st, 2008

Boredom.
While not quite as mind-numbingly boring as Des Moines, Greensboro has its fair share of listlessness. Our hotel, the Four Seasons Sheraton, is nice and theres plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area including 3 Waffle Houses, a Bojangles, Lone Star and Hooters – the site of our first meal.
Went to a place called the Smokehouse yesterday and tried hushpuppies for the first time. Delicious. Darkness Dan wouldn’t have any though. He said he was too full from eating all his mozzarella sticks. Whatever.
We’ve been hanging out with the guys from WRSU and its made time pass by quicker. Thunder Klioze and Chris Hansen Harring are good for a bunch of laughs and a new appreciation for Nascar. It’s huge here. In fact two guys almost got into a fight as we were leaving Hooters over the big Hendrix Motorsports debate. Too bad both of those guys were wrong. Tony Stewart is the best driver out there – Home Depot 20 car all the way! Don’t listen to Ovintin J’Anthony Hellman (OJ for short), he’s a Jimmie Johnson fan. He won’t admit but he’s only a bandwagon fan.
The only saving grace about NC has been college basketball. Connecticut looked really good in their win over Old Dominion in an empty Greensboro Coliseum. Rutgers did not. They’ll need to improve almost every aspect of their game if they want to defeat UConn.
And on the men’s side, it’s only appropriate that UNC won while we were in the Tar Heel State. Memphis’ win over Texas was the only blemish on my bracket as I had the other three Final Four teams. Its a beauty to go around Greensboro and see so much Carolina Blue.
But the best part of the trip so far has been the fans of Old Dominion. During a timeout the crowd, in unison, performed a school fight song and dance that was the best thing OJ or I saw while at the game, especially when it was compounded with their cheerleaders awkwardly trying to dance along as the fan section kept going. I can’t find a video of it but it’s called the “Ice Cream and Cake

With that I’ll leave you with a picture of my first sight of North Carolina.
